There are many misconceptions concerning quality assurance—such as what the field really involves and the point at which it should be incorporated into the product-development lifecycle as well as the extent of its contribution to the final experience.

We discussed this with our QA team to address these misconceptions and clarify that quality assurance is not simply a final check, but a key element in producing excellent products.

Beyond Testing: How QA Brings the Product Vision to Life

How Quality Assurance Fuels Innovation

By restricting quality assurance to defect detection, product teams lose the chance to use the discipline to foster innovation. Because the QA team understands how all the parts of a product work together, they are uniquely positioned to ask, "Is there a better way to do this?"

The question has prompted us to create new methods for ensuring quality, such as automated testing for both mobile and web platforms and data-informed issue-tracking tools which show where bottlenecks exist and help guide development decisions.

A good example of this is the project we carried out on an ambitious AI-driven conversational experience. To run the tests, the team had to simulate realistic user questions and assess responses generated from a specialized data library. Additionally, the chatbot depended on a complicated network of REST APIs, which introduced another level of technical risk.

To test the experience efficiently, the QA team created Python scripts that generated the chatbot's responses, compared results whenever new API features were added, and checked integration across all endpoints. This enabled them to assess not just whether each individual service functioned properly, but also whether the entire conversational experience stayed reliable as the system developed.

This innovative way of thinking also helped when our long-time client moved into new areas through special celebrity-led product collaborations. For the first time, both teams had to test the rapidly changing states of e-commerce—from prelaunch and live availability to sold out—within critical, real-time release windows.

The experience of overcoming that challenge improved our capacity to support dynamic e-commerce experiences and to take decisive action when circumstances changed. Once QA teams are given the opportunity to think creatively, they not only safeguard the existing quality standards but also assist product teams in adapting to new technologies, market demands, and delivery challenges.

The Future of QA: How Far Can Automation Take Us?

AI is changing quality assurance by automating repetitive tasks, speeding up test execution, and handling large amounts of data. It thus raises a question: might AI eventually render human QA specialists obsolete?

Although AI is useful for certain aspects of testing and we have used it successfully in our own work, human-led quality assurance remains essential.

Three qualities make human expertise difficult to replace:

Human judgment determines exceptional quality. While AI is capable of detecting patterns and inconsistencies, it cannot reliably make the finely nuanced and contextual decisions that allow a product to be distinguished as exceptional from one that is merely functional. Our QA team assesses the product as a whole experience, using their experience, curiosity, and careful observation rather than simply checking that tests have passed.

Effective quality assurance brings together both technical and interpersonal abilities. Having technical expertise by itself is not sufficient. QA professionals must question assumptions, communicate risks, persuade stakeholders, and build trust across disciplines. Their ability to make an impact comes from combining technical knowledge with critical thinking and leading teams toward better decisions.

Strategic thinking drives competitive advantage. AI excels at speed, scale, and repeatability, but it is less effective at assessing whether a product achieves its intended purpose, distinguishes itself in the market, or fits within a wider brand ecosystem; human QA brings unique value through this broader perspective.

  • Excellence has to be achieved through daily effort. The level of quality is the outcome of thousands of decisions taken during the entire product-development lifecycle and cannot be attained during one sprint or verified by means of a final checklist. Just as with the final, customer-facing product, our QA team applies the same standard to early prototypes.

  • What matters more than strict procedures is people. The best results come from a clear structure paired with individual judgment and autonomy. Wherever testing contradicts a previous assumption, the QA team has the authority to bring the matter to light—no matter what stage the project is at. The process must always aim to produce the best possible product, not stop the team from reviewing its decisions.
