Artificial intelligence (AI) enables machines to perform tasks commonly associated with human intelligence, including problem-solving, pattern recognition, and decision-making.

AI systems range from straightforward, rule-based algorithms to advanced models that learn from data and improve with minimal human intervention.

AI works by using algorithms and models to look at data, find patterns, and make decisions or predictions.

• Input: The system receives data such as text, images, audio, or video.

• Analysis: Algorithms process the data to detect meaningful patterns, relationships, and context.

• Output: The system applies what it has learned to generate a response, classification, recommendation, or prediction.

Through machine learning, AI systems learn from data and improve their performance without requiring every behavior to be explicitly programmed. Machine learning generally falls into three categories:

• Supervised learning: A model learns from labeled examples, compares its predictions with the correct answers, and adjusts to reduce errors.

• Unsupervised learning: A model analyzes unlabeled data to uncover patterns, relationships, or natural groupings.

• Reinforcement learning: A model learns through trial and error, refining its behavior based on rewards and penalties.

The appropriate method depends on the task, the available data, and the desired outcome.

The fundamental difference between AI and machine learning is scope: AI is the broader field of creating systems capable of tasks associated with human intelligence, while machine learning is one approach used to build those systems by enabling them to learn from data.

AI is commonly divided into three categories:

• Artificial narrow intelligence (ANI): AI designed to perform specific tasks, such as recognizing faces, translating languages, or generating content. Examples include Siri, Alexa, and ChatGPT.

• Artificial general intelligence (AGI): A theoretical form of AI capable of learning, reasoning, and performing intellectual tasks across domains at a human level. AGI has not yet been achieved.

• Artificial superintelligence (ASI): A hypothetical form of AI that would surpass human intelligence and capabilities across virtually every field.

Weak, or narrow, AI is designed to perform a defined range of tasks and remains the most common form of AI today. ChatGPT is one example.

Although ChatGPT can generate content, analyze information, and assist with many kinds of tasks, its capabilities come from learned patterns and are constrained by its training, available context, and system design. It does not possess the broad, independent understanding, reasoning, and adaptability associated with artificial general intelligence.

Generative AI uses machine learning models to create new content—such as text, images, audio, video, and code—based on patterns learned from existing data.

How does generative AI work?

• Training: The model analyzes large datasets to learn patterns, structures, relationships, and styles.

• Generation: In response to a prompt, the trained model uses those patterns to produce a new output. For example, a model trained on images can generate artwork or design concepts.

Common types of generative AI models include:

• Generative adversarial networks (GANs): Two competing neural networks—a generator and a discriminator—work together to produce increasingly realistic outputs, particularly images.

• Transformers: These models use attention mechanisms to interpret context and generate coherent content. They power GPT and many other language and multimodal systems.

Generative AI powers applications such as ChatGPT, image-generation tools like DALL·E, and music platforms such as Suno and Soundraw.

AI spans industries, analyzing information, automating processes, and supporting better decision-making. Common applications include:

• Healthcare: Analyzing medical images, supporting diagnoses, personalizing treatments, and accelerating drug discovery.

• Finance: Detecting fraud, assessing credit risk, automating trades, and providing personalized financial guidance.

• Retail: Powering customer-service assistants, forecasting demand, managing inventory, and personalizing marketing.

• Autonomous vehicles: Interpreting surroundings, identifying obstacles, planning routes, and supporting real-time driving decisions.

• Natural language processing: Enabling virtual assistants, translation services, text analysis, and content generation.

• Manufacturing: Predicting equipment failures, improving quality control, optimizing production, and powering intelligent robotics.

• Search engines: Interpreting the meaning and intent behind queries to deliver more relevant results.

• Entertainment: Personalizing streaming recommendations and creating more responsive, immersive gaming experiences.

The risks of AI must be carefully managed, but they should also be considered alongside its significant benefits:

• Greater efficiency: AI can automate repetitive or hazardous tasks, allowing people to focus on creative, strategic, and intellectually demanding work.

• Better decision-making: AI can rapidly analyze large volumes of data, helping people and organizations make more informed decisions.

• More personalized experiences: AI enables tailored recommendations and services across industries such as retail, entertainment, and education.
